Association to hold Mathematics competition
The Kaduna State Chapter of Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN) says it has concluded plans to promote mathematics education in primary and secondary schools in the state through quiz competition.
The Chairman of the association, Dr Musa Ibrahim disclosed this to newsmen in Kaduna.
Ibrahim said that the goal was to spur students’ interest in the subject for improve performance.
Ibrahim, an associate Professor of Mathematics with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, explained that the process had commence and expect interested schools to return their entry forms on or before June 10, 2019.
According to him, the competition, which will be conducted at zonal and state levels, is open to primary, junior and senior secondary school students.
“The students are expected to write an examination scheduled for June 29, 2019.
“The best 50 participants in primary school category, best 50 in Junior secondary school category and best 100 participants in senior secondary category will participate at the state level completion.
“The best 18 participants shall be coached and prepared to represent the state at National Mathematics Olympiad, which will take place at Rivers State on September 2, 2019.
“Certificate of participation shall be presented to all the participants and prizes will be given to the best three in each category,” he said.
According to him, the quiz competition is an effective way of discovering and nurturing students talented in mathematics.
The chairman said that the overall aim was to improve the teaching, learning and understanding of the subject among the students.
The association had in April sought the partnership of the state Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to find ways of improving the teaching and learning of mathematics in the state.
