Education key to better life for female folk — TUC

Mrs Oyinkan Olasanoye, the Chairperson, Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Women Commission, has described education as key to the wellbeing of the womenfolk and girl child in Nigeria.
Olasanoye spoke at the eighth Triennial Delegates’ Conference of the commission, which coincided with the International Women’s Day celebration in Lagos on Thursday.
According to her, education should be used to build a better future for women and the girl child.
“When we have education, we become enlightened to know what is fair and just.
“God has endowed us with understanding and wisdom but we need more encouragement.
“If we are given enough education, the encouragement will be there for women to perform better,’’ Olasanoye said.
She said that the Universal Basic Education Commission report in 2018 showed that there are 13.2 million out-of-school children.
She said: “It is very possible that 80 per cent of the number are made up of the girl-child. If that is the situation, there is a problem.’’
Olasanoye appealed to women to concentrate on their careers and proper upbringing of their family members in order to build a better nation.
“Some of the problems we are facing today arose because the children do not have the proper understanding and training that leads to patriotism,” She said.
Also, Mr Bobboi Kaigama, the President, Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, urged women to take advantage of their numerical strength to make the desired impact on the society.
Kaigama urged women not to relent in voicing their opinions and views on political and socio-economic issues in order to earn a pride of place in the nation’s polity.
