Entrance exams: Anambra commissioner tasks students on excellent performance

Prof. Kate Omenugha, the Commissioner for Basic Education in Anambra, has called on students preparing for the state and National Entrance Examinations to remain focused and not engage in frivolities.
Omenugha made the call in an interview in Awka on Thursday, saying that they should not allow themselves to be distracted.
“They should shun any form of distractions and study with focused attention to make all their papers at a sitting.
“Students do not have worries, the only worry a student should have is to read his books with utmost concentration to come out with good grades,’’ the commissioner said.
She said that the state had achieved high performance standard in the education sector.
She therefore urged the students to excel in the two examinations to justify the state government’s investment in education.
Omenugha disclosed that an 11-year-old Junior Secondary School One student of Grunvic International School Oba, Miss Chisomelo Anaka, made distinctions in the last state and national entrance examinations.
According to her, Anaka scored 391 over 400 in the state and 188 over 200 in the national entrance examination held in 2018.
She said, “Anaka is now enjoying her efforts in studying hard in her primary school by gaining admission into prestigious Grunvic International School, Oba.”
She therefore urged students to emulate Anaka and make their parents and state proud by being diligent and hard working.
The commissioner promised that the ministry would continue to encourage and appreciate students who brought honour to the state by their outstanding performance in external examinations.
She said that the state government was very passionate about education and poised to ensure that no Anambra child lagged behind, educationally.
“Students should take their future in their hands by being focused,” she said, while urging the teachers not to rest on their oars in nurturing the students.
“If your students excel in life, you as their teachers take the praise and blessing as well, so it is a duty you should discharge with passion,’’ she said.
The commissioner further admonished parents to be supportive and always make themselves available to encourage their children in achieving their educational goal.
She urged parents to minimise the house chores they assign to their children, especially when they are preparing for examinations.
“This is a period they need all the concentration to perform optimally in their examinations,” she said.
