A total of 2,229 people were killed, and 5,869 others were injured in connection with 4,500 road accidents in Myanmar in the first eight months in 2021.

This was according to figures released by the Ministry of Transport and Communication on Monday.

From January to August, Yangon region registered the highest mortality rate with 307 deaths, followed by Mandalay region with 274 deaths and Bago region with 256 deaths.

It showed the figures from the Road Transport Administration Department (RTAD) under the ministry.

This year saw a decrease in the number of road accident cases compared with 9,292 in the same period last year, and the death toll in road accidents decreased by 967.

Deaths and injuries related to traffic accidents remained a major concern in Myanmar, which were mostly caused by human errors such as over speeding, negligent driving, drowsy driving and others.
