Academia forms capital market association to tackle investment literacy gap

Academia operating in the capital market has formed Association of Capital Market Academics of Nigeria (ACMAN) to bridge investment literacy gap.

Prof. Uche Uwaleke, the nation’s first Professor of capital market and the President of the newly registered ACMAN disclosed this in Lagos.

Uwaleke, who is also Head of Banking and Finance Department, Nasarawa State University Keffi, said that ACMAN would serve as a forum for galvanising ideas from capital market scholars.

He said that the association would provide a platform for disseminating research findings as regards the capital market in institutions of higher learning in Nigeria.

Uwaleke said that ACMAN was a forum that brings together principally Academic Staff of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria engaged in research and the teaching of capital market related courses.

He said that such capital market related courses were Securities and Investments, Portfolio Management, Financial Derivatives, Introduction to Capital Markets, and Corporate Finance and Investment Law, among others.

“ACMAN shall be disseminating research findings and keep members abreast of developments in the global and national capital markets through regular academic conferences and publication of an international journal of capital market research,’’ he said.

Uwaleke added that the association would also serve as a bridge between the academia and the industry by working closely with academically-minded capital market operators in conducting joint research with practical relevance.

“So, membership is inter-disciplinary cutting across teaching in various programmes in tertiary institutions in Nigeria including Banking and Finance, Economics, Accounting, Management and Law,’’ he added.

Uwaleke described the birth of ACMAN as a new dawn for capital market education in Nigeria.

He, however, urged key stakeholders such as the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Nigerian Stock Exchange to leverage the association’s reach and membership strength in promoting capital market literacy in Nigeria.
