Botswana has dismissed possible shortage of fuel due to closure of three refineries in South Africa.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security, Mmetla Masire, on Wednesday said government and stakeholders in the petroleum industry have started to increase the quantity of fuel sourced via alternative routes – Nambia and Mozambique.

“Currently, we are still able to meet the country’s demand and strategic stock is available as back-up. However, the strategic stock will only be used if the situation deteriorates further,” said Masire.

He said government would continue to monitor the situation, work closely with the petroleum industry and respond accordingly to the situation as it develops.

Last year, Botswana experienced fuel shortage across the country following another breakdown of refineries in South Africa, leading to disruption of several economic activities and long winding queues for fuel at filling stations.
