The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has tasked political parties and electoral stakeholders to mobilise Nigerians for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) to ensure mass participation in electoral process.

The Chairman of CLO in Anambra, Mr Vincent Ezekwueme, gave the task while speaking in Enugu on Wednesday.

Ezekwueme spoke on the sidelines of CLO’s nationwide campaign, tagged: “Operation Obtain Your Voter Cards”.

According to him, concerning ongoing CVR, it is time politicians, political parties and stakeholders came out of their comfort zones to sensitise and mobilise the people to ensure no one is left out.

“It is of prime importance for concerted efforts to be made by stakeholders to rekindle people’s faith and trust on the sanctity and sacredness of ballot box as only legitimate weapon to elect credible leaders.

“Our people should also know that with the ballot box, they have the power to vote out inept and corrupt leaders as well as leaders bereft of ideals.

“Worthy of note is that voters’ registration through the CVR is foundation of democracy.

“It is only those who are registered and got their voter cards who dictate who rules; hence, it is not only necessary but also inevitable.

“Significantly, when you think about religion, you think about holiness. When you think about commerce, you think about profit. When you think about politics, you think about people.

“Because in democracy, the majority will always have their way, whereas the minority will always have their say,” he said.

The CLO boss said that it remained an irrefutable truth that for us to convince majority of citizenry to be part of the electoral process, we must change politics from transactional to transformational.

He urged political officer holders to convene town hall meetings with their various constituencies and update them on their stewardship and numerous democratic dividends they had provided for the people.

“This move is a good governance stance as well as trust-building and feedback mechanism meant for popular acceptance of democracy and the electoral process,’’ he said.

Supreme recalls that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) started its online CVR exercise on June 28.

The schedule of appointments for online registrants and physical CVR at INEC state and local government offices nationwide is expected to begin on July 26.
