The Czech president has demanded a list of all Russian spies active in his country, a request that, if honoured, could endanger some secret sources, security experts say.

The request by President, Milos Zeman was reported by public broadcaster CRo on Monday. The request was made to Michal Koudelka, Director of the BIS, the Czech Republic’s intelligence service.

The BIS has for years reported about increased activity by Russian intelligence services targeting NATO and EU member countries, though it has provided no concrete details.

Zeman is seen as friendly to Russia and has, in the past, accused his own intelligence service of incompetence.

“Releasing these names would put a lot of people and running operations into danger. We can’t allow it,’’ said former interior minister Frantisek Buhlan, speaking on CRo, adding that there was no reason for the president to know the names.

Opposition politicians also lashed out at the request, urging Zeman to just open his eyes to the problem.
