The Oyo State FADAMA Community Association (FCA), has urged intervention of governments at levels to help cushion effect of desertification and erosion on the agriculture value chain.

The Secretary of the association in the state, Alhaja Dauda Omotoyosi, made the call in an interview on Friday in Iseyin.

She said that the effect and impact of desertification, erosion, bad roads among others could not be overemphasised in the sector.

“Erosion is one of the major problems that is facing us here in Iseyin and indeed in most parts of Oke-Ogun, which is known as the food basket of Oyo State.

“We always have challenges with erosion which has made some of our lands which were hitherto fertile become infertile due to desertification occasioned by erosion.

“Only farmers with very solid irrigation systems can survive the erosion and lack of adequate rain, irrigation can help us with desertification as well as rain shortage as witnessed in 2020.

“It will be unfair if I say the Federal Government hasn’t been trying but they can do much better and our state government must also stop paying lip service to the plight of farmers,” she said.

The FCA secretary who is also a farmer, appealed to government at all levels to increase funding to the sector.

She said that improved funding and assistance to farmers would drastically grow the economy and attract foreign exchange to the country.
