Environmentalist warns against bush burning during harmattan

An Environmentalist, Mrs Olaide Adelusi, has warned against indiscriminate bush burning during the harmattan period, saying that it may lead to some great havoc.

Adelusi, who is also the Head of the Environmental and Health Department of the Okitipupa Local Government Council in Ondo state, said many people have lost their farms, houses and other valuables, to such incidents.

She made this plea while speaking with Newsmen on Monday in Okitipupa.

According to her, harmattan serves as a catalyst for fire, which makes it to burn faster, and had razed down many farmlands and houses.

“People should desist from acts of bush burning during the harmattan period as way of preparing their farmlands for cultivation, in order not to regret their actions.

“The harmattan is a catalyst that makes fire to burn faster and could go out of control, especially at night. Many people have lost their houses, farmlands and valuables through indiscriminate bush burning activities,’’ she said.

Adelusi noted that bush burning, besides fire outbreaks, was also accompanied with lots of health risks and environmental hazards, such as environmental degradation, environmental pollution and air pollution.

Newsmen recalls that many wild fires have resulted from indiscriminate bush burning incidents in some parts of the country, particularly during the dry season.
