Mr Godshill Kanjal, a farmer, has appealed to federal and state governments to assist farmers in northern Cross River with equipment for irrigation farming to cushion the current drop in rainfall.
Kanjal, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Kalz Farm Enterprises, told Newsmen, that irrigation farming remained the only way to sustain the current agriculture revolution of the federal and state governments.
He said that the current drop in rainfall in the area had drastically affected the farmers as their crops were drying up.
Kanjal said that many farmers had been affected as their crops were shrinking due to lack of rainfall.
“We have not had this kind of situation by this time of the year. It’s really affecting many farmers.
“Farmers that are transplanting, especially cocoa are lamenting over the current draught. I believe the only remedy is irrigation farming, which is not being practiced in this part of the country.
“I think government should help us in terms of training our farmers and providing or subsidising irrigation equipment for us.
“If the current administration’s agriculture revolution is to be achieved, then there is the need for irrigation farming in this part of the country, ” he said.
According to him, this will go a long way to assisting them in their quest for bumper harvests.
He added that many crops that were dependent on natural rainfall, especially vegetables were currently in danger of perishing due to insufficient water.
He, however, commended the Federal Government for extending inputs to farmers in the state as palliatives to cushion the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic.
