As well as calling for more funding for weapons and equipment for Ukraine, Borrell said he also wanted European Union leaders to back his proposal for a training mission for Ukraine’s armed forces.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell wants EU leaders to support another round of military aid to Ukraine, as they meet on Friday at an informal summit in Prague.

As well as calling for more funding for weapons and equipment for Ukraine, Borrell said he also wanted European Union leaders to back his proposal for a training mission for Ukraine's armed forces.

Previously, tranches of EU military aid had been distributed in 500 million euros (490 million U.S. dollars) packages from a budget mechanism called the European Peace Facility.

So far, 2.5 billion euros had been distributed to Ukraine.

With EU leaders' backing, Borrell said he hoped to propose the measures for formal approval at a meeting of EU foreign ministers later in October.
