Samuel Ocheho, Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), and Halima Benjamin, a member of the committee, have resigned from their respective positions.
Ocheho is expected to vie for the position of South-West zonal representative at the election in Ibadan while Benjamin will contest that of the North-Central in Kaduna.
Mohammed Maigidansanma, Secretary-General of HFN, who disclosed this in a statement said Ocheho tendered his resignation letter on Wednesday.
Supreme reports that Ocheho became the President of HFN in 2017 and was recently elected president of Confederation of African Handball (CAHB) Zone 3.
He was selected as Chairman of HFN’s Caretaker Committee alongside Benjamin as a member when the federation’s board was dissolved in June.
Maigidansanma added that their resignation was informed by their intention of taking part in the forthcoming zonal representatives election which will hold on Sept. 22.
The statement added that their resignation was in line with the National Sports Federation (NSF) elections guidelines, under the Electoral Committee, article 4.3.
The article states that “the caretaker committee members of the board of each of the National Sports Federations presently constituted shall not be members of the Electoral Committee. Neither shall they be eligible to contest any election unless they resign from their office or appointment not less than one week prior to the election”.
The zonal representatives elections will see that of the South-West in Ibadan, South-East in Enugu, South-South in Benin, North-Central in Makurdi, North-East in Bauchi, and North-West in Kaduna.
Supreme reports that winners from the six zones will head to Abuja for the elections into the offices of federation President and Vice President on Sept. 30.
The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development (FMYSD) and the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) are the election monitors.
