Residents have commended Kano State Government for its efforts in curtailing rising prices of food items especially rice, following the COVID-19 lockdown in the state.

A cross section of those interviewed in Kano on Saturday expressed joy over the development. Mr Umar Abdulkarim, a resident of Janbulo quarters in Gwale Local Government Area (LGA) of the state, said the action was timely especially with the Ramadan fast and the COVID-19 lockdown.

“We are honestly grateful and commend the governor for the order and the anti graft agency for implementing the order to control prices of food items in the state,” Abdulkarim said.
Mr Mustapha Mahmud, a resident of Rijiyar Zaki quarters also in Gwale LGA, corroborated the claim saying the state government had solved a huge problem for the people.

“We are thankful for taking the bold step yet we implore the government to ensure sustainability even after the fasting and the lockdown, ” he said.
A housewife Mrs Amina Usman, said she was really impressed with the action which was achieved in a limited time.

Usman, however, urged other states to adopt same strategy in order to ease the hardship of the masses and make food available and affordable.
Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje had ordered the State Public Complaints and Anti Corruption Commission to ensure that it put in place mechanism to check rising cost of food items especially rice in the state.

Ganduje also met with traders in the state where he appealed to them to reduce the prices of food items.
The anti graft agency met with the state chapter of Rice Processors Association of Nigeria (RIPAN) on Saturday where it was agreed that a 50kg bag of rice would henceforth be sold at N16,000 instead of the former N28,000.
