Minister makes case for local fabrics at Calabar Carnival
The Minister for Information, Culture and Orientation, Mr Lai Mohammed, has urged the organisers of Calabar Carnival to introduce the use of Nigerian fabrics into the event.
He said this on Sunday during the flag-off of the first dry run to commence the 2017 Calabar Carnival in Calabar.
The Minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Grace Gekpe, said this was in line with the Federal Government’s agenda of promoting home made goods.
“”Let’s have some Nigerian fabrics introduced into the Calabar Carnival.
“”This is in line with the Federal Government’s way of encouraging our locally made goods and to also encourage local investors,’’ she said.
He added that the ministry would partner with the Cross River government to publicise all the activities of the carnival.
Speaking, Mr Olusegun Runsewe, Director General of National Council for Arts and Culture, described Calabar Carnival as the 'best in Africa’.
He said that Cross River remained the leading tourism state in Nigeria.
““Calabar has remained the best tourism state capital in Nigeria and Cross River has maintained the number one position in events packaging in the country,’’ he said.
He assured the organisers of the carnival that, the National Council for Arts and Culture would partner with them to make it one of the best in the world.
Prof. Ivara Esu, Deputy Governor of Cross River, while declaring open the dry run, said that tourism remained the base of the state’s economy.
“This is our own oil well; and we will not relent,’’ he said
