Rajab Mohammad of Yobe Television (YTV) on Saturday emerged the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ), Yobe Chapter, after flooring his lone opponent.

Declaring the results in Damaturu, the Returning Officer, Hajiya Hauwa Nafuta, said Mohammad polled 187 votes to defeat Mohammed Garundole of the Yobe Broadcasting Corporation (YBC), who scored 69 votes.

She said that Mohammad, having scored the highest number of votes, had been elected and was so returned.

Nafuta said that Mohammed Bukar of YBC also scored 152 votes to defeat Maidugu Usman of YTV, who polled 76 in the Vice Chairmanship race.

The returning officer said that Alhassan Mamudo of YTV scored 158 votes to emerge the secretary after defeating Abubakar Baka of YTV, who polled 72 votes.

She said that Babayo Wakili of Jakadiya newspaper had been elected Assistant Secretary after polling 134 to defeat Alkasin Bala of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), who polled 109.

Nafuta said that Baba Mohammed, House of Assembly Chapel, Usman Muhammad, YBC and Murjanatu Hamisu, Sahel Treasure newspaper, had been elected unopposed as treasurer, financial secretary and auditor respectively.

In his inaugural speech, Mohammed promised to unite members of the union.

“There is no victor nor vanquished. We are all members of the same family. There won’t be any discrimination.

“I thank you all for giving me your mandate. I want to assure you that I will never betray the trust you reposed on me,” he said.
