The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) on Monday inaugurated seven Standing Committees and the 2021 Africa Women Conference.

Inaugurating the committees in Abuja, the National president of NCWS, Mrs Laraba Shoda, advised the committees to initiate programmes and projects that would better the lives of Nigerian women.

The President of NCWS said that the societies would use the committees to bring in young women that would sustain the future of the organisation.

“We want to bring in young women into NCWS with this, we will achieve mentorship and create a future for the organisation because young women are the future of the older women.

“While we are exiting and retiring the young ones should be taking over from us.

“If the young ones run away, NCWS will become extinct soon; so we need the young people to come and replace us.

“We cannot be recycling ourselves when a 60-year-old woman finishes as the president, a 70-year-old takes over, this is not right and we need to change,’’ she said.

The NCWS president also advised the committee for the 2021 Africa Women Conference slated to hold in Abuja to make adequate planning to ensure successful hosting of the programme.

The committees are Sustainable Development, General Welfare, Status of Women, Social Issues, Communication, Peace/Security and Headquarters.

Supreme reports that the committees have three years tenure to work with the council and the performance of the committees would determine their tenure renewal.

According to her, the chairpersons and members of the committees were picked on merit because they are to add value to the organisation and promote its activities.

‘‘As national president, I don’t need to be moving around. The state chapters should work and send in their report for us to act on.

‘‘The new committees will work to ensure that women are given their rightful places in the society. We are sensitising women to come out and take their rightful places.

“That is why we carefully selected members of the committees according to their areas of specialisation.

“ NCWS is not a political party, so we should not be compared with political party, though some of our experts belong to different political parties.

”Nobody is going to give women their right on a platter of gold. That is why we set up committees to work.

“I am sure that if they work according to our instructions, women will take over their rightful places in no time.

‘‘There are many committees and sub-committees to take care of different things because NCWS is a very huge organisation,” she said.

Shoda said that the first committee set up during her first tenure never made any impact, hence the need for the inauguration of the new committees after the expiration of the old ones.

‘‘I believe that the ones we are inaugurating today will make a difference. The committees are supposed to work on different areas.

“Any committee that fails to perform or make an impact will be scrapped.’’

She said issues that affect women “whether social, wellbeing, security and peace, we have committees that would deal with it.

”The committees will engage in sensitisation and advocacy, as you can see, each committee has its chairperson and members, they all have a mandate to perform or be fired.

The Chairperson, Communication Committee, Mrs Moji Makanjuola, said women had been cheated so much in the society, hence the need for women to stand up to take their position come 2023 general elections.

Makanjuola said that “if women are united, 'together we can build a better Nigeria.”
