The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has tasked traders and motorists on the need to avoid acts capable of causing fire disaster and road accidents.

The Head of operations, NEMA, Minna Operations Office, Mr Aliyu Kafindangi, made the call on Thursday at the agency’s sensitization rally on Fire Prevention and Eagle Eye Preparedness.

NAN reports that the rally which held at the Kure Ultra-Modern Market, Minna is focused on fire prevention and control in markets and ensuring sanity on the roads.

Kafindangi, represented by Mr Ahmed Sani, said the agency was committed to eliminating threats posed by the dry season.

“Friends and colleagues in the service of humanity, a popular maxim says prevention is better than cure.

“It is in the spirit of this saying that is properly coined as Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) by the United Nations that NEMA has put up this awareness rally.

“So that we can think and act ahead of fire disaster occurrences and road accidents especially within the purview that concerns us,” he added

He noted that the dry season coincides with the ember months period that is characterized by high rate of accidents.

“The dry season everywhere in the world has very peculiar features that constitute huge threat to the lives of the people.

“Common cold and fire incidences are the most predominant in this season here in Nigeria.

“The phenomena is even more worrisome because the dry season coincides with the ember months period that is characterized by huge vehicular movement,” he said

In his remarks, the chairman of the market, Alhaji Abubakar Dandare, said the sensitization could not have come at a better time given that three fire incidences had occurred in the market in recent times.

Dandare commended NEMA for its prompt response and assistance to the market in the past.

“We must commend NEMA as impending disaster that would have claimed many lives and destroy much properties have been averted by this kind of programme.

“So, we are more than happy to be having this programme and I want to assure you that the people here would do as you have said,” he added.

Our correspondent reports that stake holder organizations including FRSC, NURTW, Federal Fire Service, Red Cross, took turns to lecture the audience.
