For the first time in Brazil, a former police officer was convicted of crimes committed during the country’s military dictatorship.

A court in Sao Paulo sentenced Carlos Alberto Augusto to two years and eleven months in a semi-open prison, the attorney general’s office said.

Although, the retired official can still appeal the initial verdict.

Augusto was involved in kidnapping a marine in 1971. Prosecutors had charged him and other suspects back in 2012.

The case marked the first time a former officer of the military dictatorship was brought to justice for political crimes, according to prosecutors.

The prosecutor’s office said it had opened more than 50 criminal cases in recent years which were either rejected or blocked by courts.

According to the National Truth Commission, which investigates murders and disappearances during the 1964-85 military dictatorship, more than 400 people were murdered and thousands were tortured during that time.

Many went into exile or underground. There have been no real reappraisal of what happened to this day.

The current president and reserve captain Jair Bolsonaro had repeatedly expressed sympathy for the military dictatorship.
