Queen Moremi Ajasoro (QMA) beauty pageant has become a worthy platform that is boosting the nation’s culture, tradition and promoting activism among girls.

Some finalists for the third edition of the pageant and currently on a 10-day camp since Nov. 20 in Abeokuta disclosed this to Newsmen separate interviews.

Supreme Magazine reports that the QMA grand finale will take place on Dec. 2, at Abeokuta.

The wife of the Ogun state governor, Mrs Olufunso Amosu, will be the chief host, while the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi will be the grand host.

The ladies commended Oba Ogunwusi’s initiative that led to the institution of the pageant aimed at promoting the Yoruba culture through the QMA contest as worthy of emulation.

One of them, 18-year-old Adeoye Omtolani from Ekiti State University said she enrolled for the contest after reading the story of the legendary Queen Moremi Ajasoro.

She said Ajasoro’s activism and patriotic zeal displayed while alive enticed her zeal to see herself as a cultural icon in the making.

“Though, this is my first attempt and people tried to discourage me because of my age but I was moved after I read the story of Queen Moremi.

“ I found it very encouraging and I made up my mind to contest for it.

“Despite the fact that people said I am too young , I told them that a journey of a thousand miles starts with a bold step as the legendary Queen Moremi did for the love of her people,” she said.

Similarly, 19-year-old Jinadu Imisioluwa, a part two student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife , said she decided to join the contest so as to learn more about her culture

“ I decided to participate because we were replacing our culture with foreign ones which this contest tries to restore.

“Our culture is our heritage, we need to promote it to guide it going into extinction,” she told NAN.

Also, Oluwafunmilayo Oladele, an English Language student from the Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo; who is into modelling; said that her appearance in this year’s contest was her second attempt.

“ I decided to return because I don’t lose hope easily, I know I can emerge the winner this time around.

“If crowned as the new QMA, I will concentrate on promoting the Yoruba culture among our youths which is the mandate of the contest,” she said.

Also, Oluwaferanmi Ogunyede , a 300-level student of Psychology also from the Obafemi Awolowo University, said she wanted to fulfill her dream of becoming a human rights activist.

“The reason I decided to participate in this contest is because of my passion to being an activist against antisocial behaviour.

“I want to use the platform to help girls to discover their identities and how they can use such for the good of the society,” she said.

Yetunde Quadri, 24, the nurse who also won Miss Idol World Tourism international in 2018, said if she wins the contest, she will spend the Yuletide with the handicapped and physically challenged.

An aspiring air hostess, Ademilua Ifeoluwa, said her participating in the contest would have a cultural impact on her life.

Ademilua, who is an orphan also said if she emerges as the new queen, her first mission will be to reach out to the less privileged, the needy and orphans because of her experience.

Fayemi Oluwaseyi, 20, an undergraduate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, said she enrolled for the contest because she admired the cultural show she witnessed in 2017 edition.

“I decided to participate because I loved the cultural activities I witnessed in the last contest and that spurred me into learning Yoruba proverbs, foods and other details, ” she said.

Speaking on her experience on camp, Fayemi said that it was full of surprises and unique experiences.

“I’m really impressed with the sight of an African village, I never believed there could still be a village that is so beautiful with all its African setting intact, it flashes my mind back to originality, ” she said.

Erogbon Subomi, a 25-year old student of Psychology at the Obafemi Awolowo University
described the contest as a model of cultural beauty and bravery.

“This beauty contest is about our culture, bravery, boldness, beauty and smartness; it is about the promotion of the Yoruba culture, making it distinct and unique.

Olalekan Ajoke-Adey, 20, a student of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, said that cultural pageantry was one of the best platforms that could encourage youths to show interest in their culture and tradition.

“We visited the Ooni of Ife’s palace as early as 6:30 a.m. to witness the Ijala Ooni waking him up and he told us the importance of it to his daily schedule,” she said.

Adejuwon Oluwaseyi, a graduate of Esae Universite in Cotonue, in the Republic of Benin, said the concept of the cultural pageantry was a great one, because it would continue to promote the Yoruba culture among the youth.

“I decided to participate in this contest because I would love to promote the Yoruba culture, especially, among the youth and also be a role model in promoting morality,” she said.
