Right Group Calls for Concerted Efforts to Tackle Insecurity

The Centre for Human and Socio-economic Rights (CHSR) has called for genuine efforts among various ethnic groups and security outfits to curb insecurity in the country.

The National President of the CHSR, Mr Alex Omotehinse, made the call in an interview on Monday in Lagos.

He said that there was the need for collaboration of all stakeholders to rise above the current ugly tides.

Omotehinse also called on Nigerians to remove all ethnic colorations surrounding the terrorism, banditry and kidnappings in the country.

“The first step in handling this security situation is sincerity and cooperation.

“We must remove all colourations of ethnicity, religion and other sentiments from this problem in our hands, if we are going to overcome.

“To fight this problem, the Federal Government has to fight it with utmost sincerity and truthfulness with stern directive to the military to face whoever wants to constitute himself or herself to an enemy of the state.

“Changing army chiefs is not the solution to our insecurity problem. We must face the challenge together without sectional colouration and empower the military with mandate to deliver peace for the country.

“Several army chiefs have been changed without visible change in the security situation. The government should fight these terrorists with all sincerity,” he said.

The rights activist also urged the Federal Government not to treat with kid gloves all individuals or groups linked in one way or the other to terrorism and banditry.

According to him, every individual and group issuing threats should be invited for questioning.

Omotehinse expressed optimism that the government could fight the bandits, kidnappers and terrorists and restore peace to every part of the country.

“If the government wants to fight this insecurity, I believe it can do it. If the government is sincere about it, we will get over it within a month,” he added.
