Security operatives conduct stop-and search in Anambra House of Assembly complex

A detachment of heavy armed security operatives on Wednesday conducted stop-and-search of all vehicles going in and out of the Anambra House of Assembly complex.

Reports from Awka has it that a police ammoured vehicle was also stationed at the entrance to the assembly complex.

Reports has it that on Nov. 13, the police used tear gas to disperse lawmakers, staff and supporters of various factions of the Anambra State House of Assembly.

The House became factionalised with the controversial removal of the speaker, Rita Maduagwu, by about 20 of the 30 state lawmakers.

She was replaced by Ikemba Uzoezie.

But backed by some state officials, she later regained access into the chamber, on Tuesday and held a session with 11 members of the assembly.

She also described her removal as a “bundle of illegality” but Mr Uzoezie on Wednesday said her removal was irrevocable. He also denied that the removal was a plot targeted at the state governor, Willie Obiano.

Police repelled the protesters with tear gas.

The impeachment motion was moved by a legislator Mr Ikem Uzoezi (APGA) representing Aguata II Constituency and was seconded by Mr Onybuchi Offor of( PDP) representing Ekwusiego constituency

The lawmakers accused the speaker of high handiness, financial impropriety and gross misconduct in handling the affairs of the legislative arm.

Mr Benson Nwawulu (APGA) representing Ogbaru I constituency nominated Uzoezie to be the new speaker and was seconded by Mr Kingsley Irubah (APGA) representing Nnewi South I.

NAN report reports that the house held its first plenary since the crisis began on Dec. 4 which was presided over by the embattled speaker Maduagwu.

While the new speaker Uzoezie who was in the assembly complex was seen by taken away by the Department of State Services (DSS) on Tuesday about 11 am when the plenary was about to began.

At the time of filling this report the house has commenced seating with 12 of 30 members and announce the arrival of the governor and put plenary on hold till the governor walks in with his entourage.
