The Swiss Office of Public Health, on Wednesday, reported 383 new cases of the coronavirus within 24 hours, the highest daily tally since the peak of the outbreak in April.

Since the start of the pandemic, the office has recorded around 40,000 infections and more than 1,700 related deaths.

The statistics also include the tiny neighbouring principality of Liechtenstein.

A growing number of Swiss cantons have been re-introducing mandatory face masks in shops in reaction to the rising daily infections.

However, the rule will come back into force in the city of Zurich from Thursday.

Swiss Health Minister, Alain Berset, however, warned that the situation could get out of control.

“It is not easy to stick to the distance and quarantine rules, but do it,’’ Berset said.
