UN human rights monitors say they have received reports on 450 cases of torture and abuse of prisoners in Belarus amid the mass arrests in recent weeks.

The monitors also said they had been informed of violence against women and children, including sexual abuse and rape with rubber batons.
“The prohibition against torture is absolute under international human rights law.

“It cannot be justified for any reason,” said the rights experts, who are variously tasked with observing Belarus, as well as global issues such as torture, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, free speech and freedom of assembly.

At least six people who had been detained following the disputed Belarus elections remain missing, while “indiscriminate arrests” of protesters continued at the weekend, the monitors criticized.
